Design Goals:
The goal with Deep was to create a high concept, branded, and mocked up magazine. Deep is a publication about deep future predictions. Speculations like these are relatively ground in reality and are supported by the course of science today, but can be as far reaching as millions of years into the future. This issue of the magazine has a focus on how CRISPR could change our descendants and how quantum computing could change our lives.
The identity itself is made to be clean and bold so that is could be placed over highly detailed images. The result is type that grabs readers attention and images that hold that attention. The small page size of the magazine was chosen so that the a two column layout with decently large text is ideal. This makes each page more approachable to readers who would be hesitant to begin reading because of the perceived difficulty of the subject matter.

Imagery:
All the images in this magazine were rendered by Devin Norris-Lue in Blender (the human head model is from MBlab on GitHub).

Direct Mail Campaign:
A secondary part of this magazine was to create a direct mail campaign to bring in more readers. The two parts of this campaign consisted of posters that would be sent based on the recipients interests. Then a followup letter is sent that provides a discount on their subscription by signing up with the return device that is attached.
